Accountability Project
MACARTHUR FOUNDATION PROGRAM
Currently the unit is implementing a three year project titled Project to build accountability mechanisms for improving the quality of maternal health care and preventing maternal mortality.
In November 2013, WHARC received a three year grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to implement a project in Lagos State between November 1, 2013 to October 31, 2016. The project is aimed at promoting the uptake of accountability practices for the prevention of maternal mortality in Nigeria with the specific objective of improving the quality of care in maternal health at all levels of health care system and to increase the capacity as well as action of the community in accountability mechanism relating to maternal health in Lagos State.
The project is in essence on the progress to integrate the practice of Maternal Death Review (MDR) within healthcare delivery systems in Nigeria.
As part of the project implementation WHARC paid an advocacy visit to the Lagos State commissioner for Health and Lagos State Maternal Death Review Committee, identified seven facilities for the project implementation which include one tertiary, two Secondary and four Primary Health care facilities. Presently data is been collected for the assessment of the Knowledge, Attitude and Practices relating to Maternal Death Review among Policy Makers and Health Care providers in Lagos State.
Also part of the grant includes an intervention to reduce the menace of teenage pregnancy in Ekiti State. WHARC in Collaboration with Ekiti Development Foundation is implementing this project within the first year of the grant. In Particular, the main objective of this project is to facilitate a stakeholder’s forum for driving and encouraging sexual reproductive health education and encourage community participation in stemming the tide of teenage pregnancy in Ekiti State.
Recently, the implementing bodies, WHARC & EDF, organized a one day stakeholder’s forum in the Government House ground in Ado- Ekiti during which ** aimed to bring together stakeholder groups from Ekiti State to improve their understanding of the background factors leading to high rate of teenage pregnancy in the State as well as discuss, share information and collaborate on the development and implementation of strategic plan of action to reverse the trend of teenage pregnancy in Ekiti State.
